Wetlands Restoration
Our Work
Wetlands Restoration

Rehydrating Africa's great water filters.

Wetlands are Africa's hidden climate heroes. Our program rehydrates degraded papyrus swamps, peatlands and seasonal floodplains across the Lake Victoria basin, Okavango Delta fringe and Rift Valley marshes. Each site combines hydrology bunding, native sedge and papyrus replanting with community fish-pond co-management — turning wetland stewardship into a reliable income stream while restoring critical ecosystem services.

Outcomes to date

  • 1,950 hectares of degraded wetland under active restoration
  • Water filtration capacity restored for 240,000 downstream users
  • Shoebill, sitatunga and 200+ bird species regained habitat
  • Peat carbon stock up 18% within 24 months of rehydration

Our approach

01

Hydrology assessment

Groundwater mapping, flow analysis and bund design to restore natural water levels.

02

Native species reintroduction

Papyrus, Typha, sedge and floating macrophyte reintroduction matched to wetland type.

03

Community co-management

Riparian CFAs and water user groups manage fisheries, reed harvest and eco-tourism.

04

Peat carbon monitoring

Soil organic carbon sampling to quantify long-term sequestration potential.
